I am running a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 64-bit with the latest Java 8u25 32-bit and I am unable to get Cisco ASDM Launcher to run. I remember there being an issue with ASDM 6.6 and I had to downgrade Java to 7 Update 45, but I could be thinking of another program. One way to determine if the issue is Java would be to use Putty to telnet or ssh into the device and make sure you can connect. If you can connect via telnet or ssh then I would look at doing the downgrade of Java.
If you can't connect using telnet or ssh I would guess you didn't setup management or you are connecting to an ASA gateway on another subnet so I would connect to the ASA gateway subnet your computer is connected to.I use Windows 8.1 64bit with Java 7 Update 45 and ASDM 6.6(1). ASA ASDM has always given me fits concerning java.
Get support resources to design, configure, and troubleshoot the Cisco Adaptive Security Device Manager (ASDM). Hello Reese, It's best to study both: that is get to know how to do everything in ASDM (ASA-wise) and see what the CLI commands look like. Since exam seem to go beyond the blueprint sometimes, its also best practice to document each command and it's operators/options. Best regards.
Usually, once you have the console installed the java updates don't mess things up. It is that initial install that causes the problems. I have also ended up having to just use the web launcher in some cases. One thing you can do with the new java is go into the security and run the slider down as low as it will go. One thing that has been fairly successful for me is to do as others have suggested.
Roll back java, install the console, and then update java (you will still probably have to lower the security for java). Well it looks like I got ASDM Launcher to work with Java 8u25 with no other java being installed on Windows 8.1 64-bit, here is what I did.The shortcut for Cisco ASDM-IDM Launcher was pointing to javaw.exe under 'C:WindowsSysWOW64' which I just replaced this with the current location of javaw.exe. This is located in 'C:Program Files (x86)Javajre1.8.025bin'Now when I launch CIsco ASDM-IDM Launcher it works great, the only issue with this is I will have to manually change this each version of Java release. I had this problem. I have Windows 7 and Java 1.8. I kept running the DM-Installer. It ran through, told me it was completing successfully, and each time totally failed.I ran Microsoft's 'Program won't install or uninstall' fixer, and it found corrupt registry keys. Maybe I'd tried to install it before, I'm not sure.
I know that if I right-clicked on the dm-installer, I had 'repair' and 'uninstall' options, even though it WASN'T installed, so that's why I went looking for an installer fix.Tried to install it after that, worked right away.
